Piazza Palazzo di Città

The Attack on the Convoy

5. Losing the convoy

Cross Via XX Settembre and, after a short walk, you come to a small piazza with a church on the right. This is the little scene where the mafia realised they had lost the convoy, the boss and his chauffeur wondering why the traffic was so bad. "It gets worse every day."

6. The attack

Keep walking straight up this road into the next, bigger piazza — Piazza Palazzo di Città.

Look straight ahead at the imposing building: Turin's town hall. That is the balcony Camp Freddie stood on in his pink suit. To your right and left are the places the two vehicle transporter lorries parked, ready to block the piazza once the convoy came through.

Between the monument — which was covered in Union Jacks for the film — and the town hall is where the attack itself was staged. The gold Sicurezza van was winched by the Land Rover through the doors of the town hall.

But look at the archway: there are no doors. A fake door was built for the shot, because the courtyard where the gold was actually unloaded is somewhere else entirely. We will be going there later, at Location D.

This is also the spot where a car fell from one of the transporters and wrecked the police car.

7. Breaking into the convoy

Now turn right up Via Milano. Walk up two blocks until you reach the end of the shops on the right-hand side. It was at this entranceway that the Land Rover pulled in behind the security van.
