Location D. From the courtyard where the gold was loaded, through the arcade and out into Piazza Castello.

11. Loading the gold

You will now enter Piazza Carignano. On your left is the famous Egyptian Museum; facing you is Palazzo Carignano. Go in through the wooden doors in the centre of the building.

It was in this small courtyard that the gold was loaded from the security van into the three waiting Minis. In the entranceway, Michael Caine pushed his men with their pickaxe handles into position as the car transporter rammed the door from the other side.

The courtyard is much smaller in reality than it appears in the film. High camera angles were used, along with a great deal of white smoke from dry ice.

12. Through the arcade

Go straight across the courtyard and out of the rear exit of the building. Turn left and enter the Galleria Subalpina, up the steps and through the glass doors.

Look immediately to your left and you may recognise the narrow stairway. The Mini came down there and terrified the shoppers in this little arcade, then sped through the narrow walkway, out through the glass doors at the far end and left into Piazza Castello.

13. The chicken snatch

It was here that Arthur grabbed the chicken leg from the shocked lady dining outside Caffรจ Baratti & Milano.

From here, walk down Via Po towards the river.
