Books about life in Italy

I love to read and as I’ve lived in Italy for so long I like to read books about the experiences of others and their lives in Italy to compare notes and of course, whenever there’s something written about Italy there’s always a good laugh.

So, here are some of my simple reviews. I’ll keep adding as I find books worth reviewing.

HEAD OVER HEEL - Chris Harrison

HEAD OVER HEEL - Chris Harrison

It’s such a great story so beautifully told.

Hilarious. You wont find a better narrative on life in Italy. Australian 'Crris' will have your head spinning, eyes crying with laughter and have you hanging on the edge of your seat wondering where this Italian love affair will end. Traffic in Milan, Sicilian hospitality, teaching flirtatious women English and spaghetti evenings are just some of the subjects in this great book.

My rating: 10/10

LA BELLA FIGURA - Beppe Severgnini

LA BELLA FIGURA - Beppe Severgnini

Brilliant! Hilarious, insightful, and best of all written by an Italian. Beppe explains Alitalia flight attendants, shop service (or lack of) and why pretty girls working in stores know nothing. It's an essential guide for understanding the Italian mind - or at least trying..

My rating: 10/10

EATING UP ITALY - Matthew Fort

EATING UP ITALY - Matthew Fort

I bought it being more interested in the Vespa aspect of the book rather than food but the journey is a fantastic one, even if we don’t hear too much about the joys and perils of riding a motor scooter in Italy. I learned so much about food culture. Truly inspiring, well worth a read.

My rating: 8/10

ITALIAN NEIGHBOURS - Tim Parks

ITALIAN NEIGHBOURS - Tim Parks

The first of three books from the British author about his life in Italy. Very entertaining, the book is a good preparation guide if you're about to move to the ‘Bella Paese’. The book is about his relationship with his unusual neighbours and slowly builds on to his more to a musty apartment in Verona.

My rating: 8/10

AN ITALIAN EDUCATION - Tim Parks

AN ITALIAN EDUCATION - Tim Parks

The second of the trilogy so far. Not as good as the first but a worthwhile read nonetheless. Now Parks has children so different problems and new experiences challenge his existence in Verona

My rating: 7/10

A VROOM WITH A VIEW - Peter Moore

A VROOM WITH A VIEW - Peter Moore

Who hasn’t dreamed about riding a vintage, unreliable Vespa halfway across Italy? Ok, not many but on reading this you'll wish you had, or could, or will actually be inspired to. Peter’s journey is a real adventure of a soft kind - rolling hills, hospitable Italians, good food, wine that tastes like strawberries, trust, love, rip-off tourist traps, blue skies, passion and nostalgia for better days when everything was simpler. You'll feel the wind in your face on every page. More please, Peter!! Just popping down to the local Vespa shop..

My rating: 9/10

NEITHER HERE NOR THERE - Bill Bryson

NEITHER HERE NOR THERE - Bill Bryson

All of Bryson’s books are excellent and this adventure is no exception. I mention it in my list as the chapter on Italy is hilarious. His take into what goes on here is brilliant.

My rating: 10/10

THE DARK HEART OF ITALY - Tobias Jones

THE DARK HEART OF ITALY - Tobias Jones

A superb book if you've ever wondered why Italian TV is so bad, and so many other mysterious matters in Italy. Tobias dips into moments of hatred and disgust for the country and can't wait to get back to the UK. Then those moments occur that all of us that live here experience that makes you realise it’s the best place on the planet. An excellent insight into the Italian mind and politics that will never leave you bored. Very readable and entertaining.

My rating: 9/10

Danielle Mitzman

NO BOOK YET... - Danielle Mitzman

OK, it’s not a book review, but I have to give special mention to my friend, Dany. She’s a freelance journalist based in Bologna and her take on life in Italy is better than anyone else you could mention. Visit her Website, read her articles and let’s hope one day she’ll give us a book to read..
